Finding Inspiration

26 February 2015

As a creative, I know how difficult it can be to get ideas to start new projects - or even finish existing ones. Sometimes you just need a bit of inspiration to get yourself in the right direction, especially if you find yourself facing a creative block. So weather you are a writer, a blogger, a graphic designer or an artist, here are a few ideas to help you find inspiration.
Browsing Tumblr/Pinterest
Both Tumblr and Pinterest are the must-go-to sites for creative inspiration. There is something for everyone - from fashion pictures, lifestyle text posts, writing prompts and even quotes. You are bound to find something that sets off your inner spark! I can't tell you how many blog posts and story ideas I've got, just from scrolling down my dash!

A change of scenery
Face it, sitting there staring at your laptop screen for hours on end isn't going to change anything. You need to close that laptop lid, put your pens away, and go and experience something different. Take a walk. Go see a movie with a friend. Heck, go and play Tennis! Removing yourself from the situation and returning to it later with a fresh mind can make such a difference. You may even see things from a new perspective.

Create an inspiration mood board or scrapbook
Grab a board or scrapbook, and start filling it with things that capture your attention. Add annotations to images that you love, quotes that you like, words that you can think of. Be creative with reckless abandonment. By the time you've finished, you'll have something to come back to later that can help bring you ideas throughout the year. I can't tell you enough how much this helped me when I was studying Graphics back in college! Kind of a lifesaver.

Looking at examples of other work
By taking a look at work of people in your field, you may get an idea of things you could do. Explore far and wide, and see what you like about their work. Bookmark their pages. Make a note of what you think works well, what you like about it, and what you don't. Learn from their art work. You may even come up with ideas inspired by their creations!
