10) Classic - MKTO
This duo - described to be one of the breakout acts of the year - created a song, that mixes modern day pop with sweet nostalgia of the old-school era. It's jazzy tone creates an upbeat tempo that is so vivacious, making this the perfect song for getting ready to go out in the evening. 'Classic' literally provides the perfect excuse to put on that prime-time red lipstick, along with those pair of classy nude coloured heels you have just sitting in the back of your closet.
9) Not A Bad Thing - Justin Timberlake
After blessing the world with 'Suit and Tie' and 'Mirrors' last summer, Justin Timberlake has returned to the music scene with another thrilling track called 'Not A Bad Thing'. Showcasing influences of R'n'B slow jams from the 90s era, this track is perfect for late night drive thru - sipping McDonald milkshakes around the town.
8) Life In Color - One Republic
One Republic have produced some amazing songs in their music catalogue, and I have loved them for it dearly. This past year I had the pleasure of watching them perform live, and this song, was one of the most memorable performances of the night. I can not tell you how many times I've replayed this song. The lyrics are beautifully reflective and happily content, perfectly describe what it's like to live purely in the moment.
7) Brand New Day - Kodaline
At first glance or ... listen rather, this song is far from your average summer track. It's slow paced with sober tone, that is miles away from the usual upbeat tempo you find on the radio. But that's why I love it so much. With talks of travel and moving forward, 'Brand New Day' is literally the perfect get away song - gearing yourself for a holiday destination of adventure, far from your hometown.
6) Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
The much anticipated follow up album by Ed Sheeran debuted this summer, and with it came some pretty amazing songs, including the chart topping hits 'Don't' and 'Sing'. This acoustic based ballad just oozes of true love and romance, leaving my skin covered in goosebumps every single time. Despite not being based on 'The Fault In Our Stars', I'm always reminded of Hazel and Augustus whenever I hear this song. Bah - the emotions!
5) Two Worlds Away - Nina Nesbitt
Thank you Spotify for introducing me to not only Nina Nesbitt, but this wonderful song. There's something very nostalgic about this track that talks of reflection, which is literally the perfect way to end the summer - reminiscing about past memories and carefree
4) Rude - Magic!
Sneaking into the charts in the late summer, this catchy song quickly became an overnight classic and a favourite of mine. Despite its seemingly upbeat reggae tone and playful-but-yet-soulful vibe, this song deals with the idea of rejection and recovery. When the father of your significant other tells you you can't get married to the girl you can't live without, you let it go and move on .... by marrying her anyway. Something tells me that I'll be singing this all year long!
3) Don't Stop - 5sos
This Aussie band seem to be taking the world by storm from their very first international success, 'She Looks So Perfect'. Their second single, 'Don't stop' is literally the epitome of a teenage dream, about a young guy chasing the girl of his dreams whose captured everyone's attention. There's something very nostalgic about this song, that reminds me of the classic pop-rock boyband with a modern twist.
2) Charli XCX - Boom Clap
From one of the best movie of this year's soundtracks comes this lovely compelling song, that never fails to put a smile on my face! That feeling of falling in love and early stages of romance in ones adolescence are perfectly encapsulated in this song, through its infectious beat and heartfelt lyrics.
1) Cool Kids - Echosmith
And finally, number one ... One of my favourite discovery this summer was the classic band, Echosmith made up of the Sierota siblings ranging from the ages of 15 to 21. The songs on their amazing debut album, 'Talking Dreams', has a distinct weightless and summery feel to them that has been a pleasure to listen to. This song in particular is absolutely spectacular. Everyone can understand the feeling of being a misfit in their own world, feeling lost and unable to fit into the crowd. It is also one of the perfect songs to listen to just in time for school season as well!
