Four Podcasts To Keep You Company On Your Commute

20 February 2017

You're waiting on the platform for your next train into work. The sky is a blended mixture of light pale blue and auburn. The bitter cold from the morning air hits your cheeks, while you're sandwiched between two strangers. As your neighbour taps his boot against the concrete, you can't help but peer over the edge of the platform searching for on-coming trains. Finally, the train arrives, but as it's the early morning rush hour, you struggle to find a seat and are left standing in the crowd. Next to you is a young teen, blasting the latest rap tune gracing the Big Top 40. The beat pulses through the airwaves on the tight-knit carriage. How can you escape the chaos around you for the next hour? How do you entertain your mind from solid boredom?

Podcasts have honestly been my personal life-saver on the morning commute. An entertaining topic and captivating voice can definitely make that incredibly long journey fly by. They can be a great way to brighten up your morning. I've fallen in love listening to engaging stories and found inspiration from the great and passionate. So today, I'm going to share a few of my favourites with you.

Serial
One summer afternoon in 1999, Hae Min Lee mysteriously disappears one day after school. Six weeks later, her ex-boyfriend and classmate Adnan Syed is arrested and charged for her murder. After all this time, he continues to claim his innocence. Captivated by his story, Sarah Koenig speaks to the people who were there the day Hae disappeared to uncover the real story behind the case.

To the podcast that started it all of, thank you! Serial is the ultimate classic that will stay with you long after you finish the series. The accounts told by the then teenagers now-turned-adults are not only captivating but so suspenseful. Episode by episode, you are able to piece together elements of the puzzle. You constantly wonder, 'Is Adnan truly guilty or was he wrongly convicted of a crime he didn't commit?' The anticipation alone will keep you entranced until the very end.

#GIRLBOSS
If you're looking for a power podcast to prep you for your day at work, this is it! Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal and the Girlboss community, is one of the most notable figures in the world. #GIRLBOSS is a compilation of inspirational conversations with women who've worked their way to success.

Don't be misled by the title, this podcast is not just for women. From personal stories of humble beginnings to discussions about empowering career goals, Sophia does a brilliant job of keeping the balance between the serious sage advice and light-hearted humour. It is so inspiring to see the leaders share their knowledge and experiences of life. You'll be thoroughly engaged and entertained.

Lore
With one of the most captivating and soothing voices ever to grace the planet, Aaron Mahnke tells the stories of folklore taken from historical events. Describing these supernatural elements alongside fact and logic, there is a sense of realism behind these spooky stories which keep you on the edge of your seat.

Now as most of you know I'm not usually one for horror stories, but the beauty of this podcast is just undeniable. Aaron has a way of drawing you in by creating beautifully vivid descriptions of characters and passing towns. The storytelling in this podcast is absolutely superb and worth the nightmares! Though I warn you, be careful not to listen to the episodes in one go. You may find yourself a little spooked come midnight when you turn the lights off...

Gilmore Guys
Now who said that Gilmore Girls was just for girls? Kevin Porter and Demi Adejuyigbe are the masterminds behind this brilliant concept. Hardcore fan Kevin introduces Demi to the world of Gilmore Girls. Together they divide deep into the episodes of the show and fanboy till the sun goes down.

The pair are the most charismatically charming and funloving hosts I have come across in the world of podcasting. I love listening to these guys interview the cast of Gilmore Girls. From discussing the details of Stars Hallow, the film industry to food preferences, it's a delight to listen to them converse and speak with the cast. They both have very fruitful careers ahead of them and I can't wait to see what they get up to next!

Which Podcasts do you recommend? Any that I should be looking out for?
