2017: A Year In Song

29 December 2017

2017 was the year of chaos, childhood reboots and the domination of K-Pop boybands! It's no secret that we all faced incredible hardships this year, but let's not forget the breathtaking moments we witnessed this year that really restored faith in humanity. As we say goodbye to another year, let's celebrate the awesomeness we've shared through the power of the voice and song.

January - 'Solo Dance' - Martin Jensen
Girls, how many times have you been out with your friends looking to just enjoy yourself when you, unfortunately, gain the eye of unwanted attention? Not only does this track have funky beat, but those lyrics are female empowerment to the core! Even after all this time, it's still a vibing tune.

February
'Castle On The Hill' - Ed Sheeran
Growing up alongside Ed, I've always felt like his songs truly relate to the current life experiences we're facing. It's extraordinary! 'Castle On The Hill' is the modern day ode to every hard-working millennial hit with an intense case of nostalgia and excitement, as we leave behind our working lives returning to the comfort of our hometowns. Captured oh so epically and beautifully.

March
'Stay' Zedd ft Alessia Cara

This song was the highlight of my year. I can't even find the words to describe how happy it makes me feel every time I hear that soothing hum intro. Talk about electric! Alessia Cara smashes every single song she sings and this is part of that movement. What makes this song even more epic is that it was practically the soundtrack of 'Everything, Everything' - YA stan forevermore.

April
'1-800-273-8255' by Logic ft Alessia Cara & Khalid
When you turn on the radio or pick up a magazine, you usually see a world full of glam and idealised reality. But this song is the rawest and heartfelt track I've ever heard. It perfectly paints a picture of the struggles people face battling against mental health and hardships in life from their perspective. The number of souls touched by this one gem - oh my god. Legendary to the first degree.

May -  'I Like Me Better' by Lauv
Lauv is one of my favourite discoveries of 2017. His soothing vocals and jazzy upbeat tracks create incredible visual and impactful stories that unfold lyric by lyric. They just speak to my soul! This boy needs to release his album asap next year because the wait is just too much!

June - 'Strangers' by Halsey ft Lauren
Returning with a vengeance is Halsey! While Badlands explored the apocalyptic realm of no return
, Hopeless Foundation Kingdom was romance, tragedy and redemption all in a pretty bow. I love the way she creates concept albums with a narrative, but how each song tells it's own story too. Strangers is also an epic tune that is entrancing as hell.

July - 'Despacito (Remix)' by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ft Justin Bieber
As soon as you hear that gentle guitar strum transform into eargamisc musical ocean waves, it's as if the world has come full circle. I love the fact that this song literally has paved the way for international artists to seep into the mainstream. Plus ... it sounds so awesome too! So freaking epic.

August - 'Attention' - Charlie Puth
The 90s and early 00s were the really best time for soulful RnB.  Somehow Charlie has managed to capture that essence and combined it with an uber electric quirky beat that breathes life into the radio. Seeing him unveil this exterior layer to his personality and music makes me think his next album is going to be one hell of a groundshaker!

September - 'There's Nothing Holding Me Back' by Shawn Mendes

Let's face it, when it comes to Shawn, anything he sings and writes melts the hearts of every single female. This track is no freaking exception. Poor Shawn - he keeps chasing after a wild-child who keeps him running for miles! It's his own fault since his whipped ...

October
- '
Blood, Sweat and Tears' - BTS
It's a known fact that K-Pop Boybands have the ultimate form of swagger. From their sultry eyes, impeccable fashion taste to their electric dance moves, they dominate the floor they stride on. BTS literally smashed into the global music sphere and I am so freaking proud. You know what the best part is? This is only the beginning ...

November 'Homemade Dynamite'  (Remix) Lorde ft Khalid, Post Malone and SZA
Electrically charged and mellow to the bone, Lorde has always had an ethereal-esque tone to her tracks and this hit is no different. Every featured artist on this song literally compliments her raw raspy vocals, which takes this song on a whole different level. Trans-freaking-cended I tell you.

December - 'Alexander Hamilton' by Cast of Hamilton

To the musical that dominated me eardrums for the entire year .... it's Hamilton! After waiting - for what feels like a lifetime - Hamilton finally premiered at the West End in London this month! I'm not usually one for musicals, but the diverse inclusivity and R&B/Hip-hop-esque soundtrack on the most historical story ever, has me singing at the top of my lungs. Oh lord!

What songs made your year?
