Growing up, Digimon was my favourite animated series - ever. After a long day spent at school, I vividly remember running out of the passenger seat of my dad's silver Nissan into the living room and switching on television at 3:30 sharp! Back then in the late 90s and 00s, when an episode aired you saw live then and there, and that was that. No catching up online. No second chances - zilch. How times have changed, eh?
I clung to each episode with such curiosity, eager to know what would happen next. And even after all this time, I still love this show with all my being. Now that's not to say that the cheesy pre-teen dialogue doesn't make me cringe - I mean seriously guys? Some of those one liners ... Nope. But this was one of the first shows I fell in love with, where I was genuinely captivated by dynamic characters and meaningful storylines. I was hooked. I'm so excited for the upcoming Digimon Adventure Tri episodes coming our way. I can hardly wait! So on this segment of Life Lessons, I'm proud to present the lessons I learnt from Digimon Adventure.
1. Life can be pretty unpredictable.
Snowfall in the middle of July? Unexpectedly winding up in an exotic land called the Digital world, and sent to save mankind? Just your average day at summer camp really. But here's the truth. No matter how much you try and plan things out, life never travels the way you expect. There are so many unknown factors that you just can't plan for, and sometimes you have to go with the flow. Because without these diverging pathways, you would never experience the amazing things yet to come. You would never find yourself where you need to be at this point in time, and meet the people who you'll come to call family.
2. True strength comes from within
When the young digidestined are fighting against their ultimate enemy, Apocalymon in Digimon Adventure, they reach for the crests - the physical embodiment of their power - to defeat him. But as these tools are destroyed by the ultimate power, the gang find themselves hopelessly lost and terrified for their lives. During these moments of weakness, the digidestined come to realise that the source of their power comes from within themselves.
Most of the time, we often underestimate the power we hold with every fibre of our being. You are after-all your most greatest and harshest critic. Because of these internal beliefs, we don't see or feel our true potential. That is why we believe the source of our own strength comes from others or outside forces; 'If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have achieved this ...' But the truth is, you are much stronger than you know. You are capable of more than you know.
3. Difficult situations challenge you to become better.
You never truly know what you're capable of until you are put to the test. When Tai, Izzy, Mimi, Sora, Matt, T.K and Joe find themselves at the mercy of Kuwagamon - at the very beginning of their journey though the digital world - their miniature digital friends attempt to defend the group. They then digi-volve into their Rookie forms to save the day, and defeat the menacing beetle creature. Without that challenge, they would have never experienced a digi-evolution. They would never have known who they could become an begin their incredible journey to come.
Without trying moments, life would be so boring wouldn't it? Everything would be the same - a dull day of routine. Though it may not seem it at the time, life gives you what you need when you need it. Difficult situations challenge you to become more than what you currently are. They push you to become the best version of yourself, and that's a pretty beautiful thing.
4. People have the ability to change
Remember when Ken stood proudly as the Digimon Emporer, terrorising innocents across the land? How tragic was that? A former digidentised travelling down the wrong path. And though he'd previously embraced his inner dark side, Ken was able to see the error of his ways. He was able to change, despite becoming blacklisted and shunned from the Digital community. But he pushed through and proved them wrong, by becoming more than what was expected of him. Everybody makes mistakes. It's a natural part of life. But you are constantly evolving. Who you were last year is not who you are today. Don't let one definition of you, control who you are for the rest of your life.
5. Together you can accomplish more than as an individual
While you can achieve so many great things as an individual, collaborating with people around you can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. Think about it - working alongside other people who have different strengths from you, allows you to see things in a different way. You're able to gain a fresh perspective and bounce ideas off each other. You'll achieve things you could never have dreamt of on our own. Having a companion along for the ride is incredible feeling. Someone to share your heartaches and excitement with, while you work together side by side. Tai and Matt are just living proof of that!
So, who else will be watching Digimon Adventure Tri? What are you most excited to see?
