    002. Severed Heads, Broken Hearts

    2 December 2013

Note: This review contains spoilers under the cut. You do not want to get spoiled. Trust me.
'Severed Heads, Broken Hearts' or 'The Beginning of Everthing' tells the story of Ezra Faulkner, a boy who had it all; a tennis star athlete, student body president and boyfriend to cheerleader Charlotte. One night, his entire life comes crashing down, when he almost loses his life in a car accident. Losing everything he has ever known, Ezra is finds himself piecing together a new identity in his final senior year, where he meets Cassidy Thrope - an enigma who has caught his attention.

If you are a fan of The Perks of being A Wallflower, and The Fault In Our Stars, then this book is perfect for you! It's crazy - I actually bought this book as an impulse buy, and I am so glad I did! It may sound crazy, but to me, I feel like this book came a pivotal moment of my life where I had been thinking a lot about life, the people in it, the future, the path I want to lead, the friendships I've had, and this book just addressed it all. In a sense it is literally about the beginning of everything, the world beyond your teen years and how your teenage experiences can shape you. It may seem like a cliché kind of story, a popular kid who falls into the lower heaps of the social chain and learns right from wrong, but this book isn't about that. It is all about the idea of self discovery - finding yourself through struggles, reinventing and defining yourself on your own terms. And that to me, is one of the most beautiful things in life, and this book just executed that perfectly. It is beautifully written, and certain aspects of the book are pretty thought provoking. They actually challenged my perspective on certain topics. There is something about coming of age stories that I love, and this one held a specific kind of charm for me. That being said ... it's not a book for everyone. I do highly recommend it - it has definitely become one of my favourite books of the coming year. For sure.

    Perspective: Turning 21

    29 November 2013

So today, for once, I'm going to talk about something a little bit different outside the world of media entertainment and creativity.  There was a time in my life during my years at school when I thought, 'by the end of my university years, I will know exactly what to do with my life. I will have almost everything figured out, and it'll have all come together by the time I approach adulthood.' Now, almost several years later, I'm in my third and final year of university and ... I'm still trying to figure it all out. The amount of days I have left towards post-graduation life is continuously growing smaller and smaller, and turning 21 ... is just another one of those milestones that just signifies adulthood.

Those questions that I've always wondered about; what I want to accomplish in my life, who I want to be, my intended plans for after graduation, are kind of haunting me at this very moment in time.  But here is the simple truth - no one on the entire planet has the exact answer to all of these questions. Even if they do, the answers they have aren't set in stone. You never really know where life can take you. It's pretty unpredictable. What I failed to realise back then is that, having a plan isn't always the best thing. You never know what's around the corner, and having a plan or your eyes focused on one section of the road can stop you from seeing other things come your way. For some people, things come early on in life. For others, it comes at the most unexpected moments. It's just the way it is - serendipitous. But that is the beauty of it all. You never know what will happen and when it will happen. Your age does not define you, or the time you will reach success. Age is literally just a number, it is you who gives it meaning.  To assume that you will have all the answers by a certain age, is to assume that by that particular point you will understand exactly how the universe works - and no one has managed to do that. It's okay not to know where you're going, time and experiences will help lead you there.

So, as I turn 21 this week ... I vow to focus on the now. I vow to focus on present, instead of living in a future, which I'm helping to shape by living in the present. Tomorrow bring what may, today is all I know. And for that I'm happy, because the future is full of bright opportunities and chances that I have yet to come across, memories that I have yet to make, and experiences I have yet to live. Just thinking about the possibility of that is so exciting. To be open to new experiences, because you never know where you're going, and who or what you may find along the way. Striving for the best forever and always!

    Three Minutes, Plugged In

    18 November 2013

"Isn't it amazing that for three short minutes you are able to be transported to another world without even moving from your seat? How you are able to enter a virtual world purely created by your imagination and the lyrics and tempo of the chosen song so instantly."

I love thinking about everyday mundane things. There is just something so beautiful about the world, and people going about their everyday lives. Sometimes it's hard because you're having a bad day, or maybe you're stressed out about something that has yet to happen. Music has the priorities to really change your day around, and I know for me it's done that plenty of times. I can't tell you how many times a particular song has given me inspiration or courage just for those three short minutes. To read more, please click here.

    "Meeting Your Mother"

    11 November 2013

"What I didn't know then was that the beginning of my love story wasn't so far away, and that New York would end up being my home for many more years to come ..."

After watching a couple of episodes from the final season of 'How I Met Your Mother', I felt inspired and extremely nostalgic. The long journey of how Ted Moseby finally met his wife is coming to an end. It seems like we have seen the best and worst of his character. It's like saying goodbye to someone you've known for so long. The current uncertain limbo he faces concerning his direction in life, in this season, is something I can definitely relate to, especially with my graduation date looming closer and closer. I channelled my inner Ted Moseby, the philosophical nerd and hopeless romantic, and came up with this interesting fiction piece. To read the rest of this short creative piece, please click here. Please, tell me what you think - I would love to know!

Pretty Little Liars: The Disastrous Halloween Episode That Was.

    4 November 2013

I've been a fan of 'Pretty Little Liars' since the beginning of the show's première. Since then, the show has had some incredible ground-breaking moments, but has also suffered from some pretty sad lows. Each year, the highly anticipated Halloween episode never fails to shock, surprise and entertain fans like myself. They've always almost gained a reputation amongst the fans, for being so brilliantly constructed. Almost ...

Since the show began to gain worldwide success, it is pretty evident that there has been some commercial interference occurring. We've seen product placement, and also the prolonging of story lines, ensuring that the show has as many seasons as possible to keep executives happy. This has definitely affected the quality of the show. Before the première of the fourth season, the producers had to have a recap episode to remind fans of all the small unresolved story lines that had occurred in previous seasons. In my opinion, it wouldn't have been a problem if some of these story lines were addressed in an appropriate time frame. It's safe to say I've had my frustrations with the show. But this year's Halloween episode was a completely new low. The episode seemed to completely and utterly revolve around the world of Ravenswood. Sure, I see the potential for the show. I do. Having a casual association in the episode would have been alright. But having it become a predominant part of the episode, really affected the quality of this year's Halloween episode. All in all, this episode felt just like a promotional tool for 'Ravenswood'.
